Fifty years between the first visit and the second.
The first time Kevin put on a Santa suit, it was because his mother asked him to. She was the administrator of a senior living facility, and they needed a Santa for the Christmas party. That was very nearly the end of it — for close to fifty years.
Then, four years ago, he was walking through the mall at Christmastime and passed the Santa photo booth. He had a decent beard going, and it caught the crew's attention. One of them stopped him and asked whether he would be interested in being their back-up Santa. They traded information.
The call never came that year. But he had mentioned it to his wife — and she did not argue the fact, or even try to talk him out of it. Within a few days he had ordered a Santa suit online. It arrived shortly after, and he was on his way.
Four seasons later, Santa Kevin is a trained, insured and background-checked professional Santa working across the Finger Lakes region of Central New York — with a beard that is, as he will happily tell you, the only kind worth having.
